Applications

Sulphuric acid/ Sulfuric acid is used in a wide range of applications including domestic drain cleaner, electrolyte based lead-acid automotive batteries, laboratory reagent and numerous types of cleaning agents and chemical products as a dehydrating agent.

These chemical products include:

  1. Fertilizers like single super sulphates
  2. Acrylic glass
  3. Pigments like titanium dioxide
  4. Detergent
  5. Explosives
  6. Paints

What are the uses of Sulphuric Acid?

It is also used in mineral processing of copper, nickel and uranium via electrolysis and electroplating. It is a lixiviant and is used for cyanide destruction in gold mining.  In gold processing, loaded wire wool is digested by pouring sulphuric acid over it. The resultant cake formed after dewatering is fluxed before smelting to produce gold.

It is also used in large quantities as a pickling agent at iron and steel making industries to remove oxides from the surface of metals. Production of phosphoric acid also utilizesit in “wet method” manufacturing procedure. Conversion of cyclohexanoneoxime to caprolactam requires it as an acid catalyst.

Other manufacturing processes include wastewater treatment, textile fibre galvanizatione.g nylon, rayon, cellulose films. A very minor agricultural use (about 0.025 %) is as a desiccant for potato crops.

Sulphuric acid is produced using sulphur and water as raw materials via contact process, wet sulphuric acid process, lead chamber process etc. Estimated worldwide production of sulphuric acid is 160 million tonnes/year.

The sulfur atom is bound to two oxygen atoms through double bonds and two hydroxyl groups (OH) through single bonds. It is a diprotic acid, as it can release two protons.

It is a strong mineral acid that is highly corrosive and hygroscopic. Material is a powerful oxidizing and dehydrating agent causing rapid human tissue destruction on contact. Concentrated acid is very exothermic (generates heat) when mixed with water and it can lead to explosions. It may also cause severe skin burns and eye damage if handled improperly.
